INTERNSHIP FOR RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF DIGITAL ARCHAEOLOGY (F*M)

(full time, 40h per week)

at the OeAI Head Office in Vienna.

The Austrian Archaeological Institute is an internationally renowned institution in the field of archaeological basic science with excavation projects in Turkey, Egypt, Greece, and the area of the Alps and the Danube. The core strength of the institute is field archaeology in all its sub disciplines as well as cultural and historical analyses based on material remains. The Research Group DIGGING.DIGITAL is primary focusing on developing and adapting methods of data acquisition, processing and analysis of archaeological research data.

Areas of responsibility:

  •   Survey / inventory of available research data at the institute
  •   Collaboration in conceptualising and implementation of database solutions for the archaeological
  •   Research on already existing database solutions
  •   Participation in the implementation of a data management plan

    Requirements:

  •   Bachelor or Master in Archaeology with focus on digital Archaeology or in computer sciences / informatics with a focus on Digital Humanities / Archaeology
  •   Team minded
  •   Good communications skills
  •   Written and spoken fluency in German and English

    We offer:

    In the first three months, the gross salary will be EUR 1.359,45 / month, afterwards EUR 2.718,90 / month. The internship will start on January 2, 2020 and lasts 12 months.

Last week I presented at a workshop organised by Johannes Preiser-Kapeller in Vienna and Johannes already made the videos of that workshop available! That’s lightning fast academic work for you 🙂

Next up was Mihailo Popović talking about the historical geography of Byzantium, followed by Johannes Preiser-Kapeller and Ekaterini Mitsiou presenting their recent work on social networks of Byzantium. The workshop was hosted at the Institute for Byzantine Studies (Austrian Academy of Sciences) in Vienna and was titled “Connecting the dots. The analysis of networks and the study of the past (Archaeology and History)”.

Networks workshop Vienna 10 June

I have been invited to present at the Institut for Byzantine Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences on the 10th of June in a workshop titled “Connecting the dots. The analysis of networks and the study of the past (Archaeology and History)”, organised by Johannes Preiser-Kapeller. I am very much looking forward to the event! Dear Ladies and Gentlemen!

On the 10th of June 2011, the Institut for Byzantine Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Wohllebengasse 12-14, 1040 Vienna, Austria) will host the half-day Workshop “Connecting the dots. The analysis of networks and the study of the past (Archaeology and History)”.

As keynote speaker, Tom Brughmans from the Archaeological Computing Research Group, University of Southampton (UK) will present his project on Archaeological Network Analysis; he has established an online blog for this new field of archaeological research (https://archaeologicalnetworks.wordpress.com/) as well as a network of researchers interested in NA. Most recently, he has organized a session on Archaeological and Historical NA for the “39th Annual Conference of Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology“ (CAA 2011) in Beijing (China; cf. https://archaeologicalnetworks.wordpress.com/caa-2011/).
After the presentation of Tom Brughmans, the research on Network Analysis at the Institut für Byzanzforschung will be briefly presented. Then there will be opportunity for all participants to present and discuss their experiences with Network Analysis (participants are invited to briefly – 5 minutes – present their ongoing projects– laptop and video-beamer will be provided).
